Princeton University Press and Planeta USA announce a new publishing partnership

Pianeta Libri news. Turin, June 9, 2023 – Princeton University Press (PUP) and Editorial Planeta are excited to announce a new publishing partnership. This collaboration between PUP and Planeta’s recently relaunched US division will support the simultaneous publication of select general interest titles in English, with PUP, and in Spanish, with Planeta.

Books for the initiative will be selected by both publishers, from among Princeton University Press’s English-language acquisitions, and Planeta will oversee translations into Spanish. The publishers will coordinate on marketing, sales, and publicity campaigns to engage readers and retailers across the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean, with Planeta leading Spanish-language outreach and PUP leading English-language efforts.

The first book to be published as part of the endeavor is Puerto Rico: A National History (April 2, 2024) by historian Jorell Meléndez-Badillo, which tells the panoramic story of the archipelago’s people, politics, economics, and culture, from pre-Columbian times to the present. Puerto Rico: A National History blends the personal with the historical, covering colonialism, revolt, and the formation of a national identity while advancing new perspectives not only on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean but on the United States and the Atlantic world more broadly.

At Princeton University Press, the collaboration has been led by Inés ter Horst, Director of Rights, Contracts, and Permissions, who notes, “This exciting and much anticipated partnership could not have begun with a better book to unite Spanish and English readerships in the United States and beyond. The program builds upon a foundation of decades of translation licensing between Princeton University Press and Grupo Planeta, and we are confident that this expanded partnership will bring us and our respective readers even closer.”

“As part of Grupo Planeta, the leading publisher group in Spain and Latin America, we are committed to bring the best books in all categories to the growing audience in Spanish in the United States,” said Cristóbal Pera, VP and Publisher of Planeta USA, “and this alliance with Princeton University Press guarantees that works like Puerto Rico: Historia de una nación, and many others to follow, will advance the cultural and political conversation of Latinos with our simultaneous editions in English and Spanish.”

As a global publisher committed to sparking critical conversations the world over, we at PUP are thrilled to be publishing Jorrell Meléndez-Badillo’s remarkable Puerto Rico and grateful to be doing so in the company of, and in concert with, our partners at Planeta.
