GMF news - World Trade Fair Guide. Turin, February 18, 2019 – From 10 to 14 April 2019, S.I.H.A. will be celebrating the 30th birthday of Techno-Classica Essen. With the 31st edition of the World Show for Vintage, Classic & Prestige Automobiles, Motor Sport, Motorcycles, Spare Parts and Restoration, we look back on 30 continuous successful years. Over 220 exhibiting classic car associations also make it the world’s club meeting place for the international classic car scene. Organised in February 1989 as the first large German motor show for vintage cars and collector’s vehicles, it was and is an often copied but never reached model for many other events of this kind.

Over the past 30 years, Techno-Classica Essen has cemented its importance as the number one of the international classic car and collector’s vehicle trade shows with more than 1,250 exhibitors from over 30 nations. It offers a comprehensive picture of the international classic scene. Important international car manufacturers use the charisma of the automotive classic world show: More than 20 automobile brands present exquisite exhibits on their factory stands, most of which can only be seen at Techno-Classica Essen. They make the world’s leading automotive trade show the most important history forum for the international automotive industry. With their mostly spectacular appearances, they demonstrate the importance they attach to the world show of automotive passion. The classic enthusiasts appreciate this: in 2018 more than 180,000 visitors came into the fully occupied exhibition halls at Essen’s Grugapark. And also the exhibitors know: At the Techno-Classica Essen they play in the Champions League.

With regular model upgrading measures, the classic world show has maintained and even expanded its pioneering role – and has remained the unrivalled original. The recipe for success: Always to present the latest from the international scene as a selection of the best from all areas of the classic hobby to visitors from over 40 nations.

The leading trade show for the classic scene is once again increasing its attractiveness this year with a number of innovations. The new design and structure of the Essen Exhibition Centre, for example, will enable the organiser S.I.H.A. to arrange the full programme in twelve bright halls – including the Gruga Hall – with an even clearer structure and therefore more visitor-friendly than in the 20 previously existing halls, some of which were labyrinthine. The entire exhibitor arrangement underwent a reorganisation, although care was taken to maintain traditional structures wherever possible.

The car trade continues to occupy a large space with around 2,700 classic cars, most of which are offered by renowned professionals – from the noble Rolls-Royce and pre-war rarities such as Isotta-Fraschini to supercharger cars of the Mercedes-Benz 500 K and 540 K series, Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche and Lamborghini sports cars and prestige cars of the post-war period, everything is on offer that makes the collector’s heart beat faster. However, Techno-Classica Essen also has attractive offers for newcomers to the classic scene: More than 30 percent of the cars offered for sale are affordable “plug and play” young classic automobiles. The crème de la crème of the international classic dealers meets here with suppliers of utility classics and private sellers. The latter are mainly to be found on the four open-air grounds. In its anniversary year, S.I.H.A. paid particular attention to allowing primarily the most attractive young classic cars to be sold on the 110,000 square metre exhibition area. One of the traditions cultivated at Techno-Classica Essen is the Concours d’Élégance, in which an international jury of experts and specialist journalists select the most beautiful, elegant and attractive classic dealers and “the Best of Show”.

There is also a “Club Grand Prix”, where the most attractive club presentations are rewarded with high cash prizes for the club funds. No wonder that Techno-Classica Essen 2019 is again considered the most important classic trade show of the year for the more than 220 exhibiting classic clubs and interest groups: the volunteers’ passionate commitment reflects the diversity of the international vintage and classic car scene.

For the anniversary exhibition the organiser offers again a special world-class exhibition; this year under the slogan “Tour de France Automobile Legends”. The stage tour, which took place from 1899 to 1986 with interruptions, is even regarded as a model for the Tour de France for bicycles, which has been running since 1904. It strengthened its leading position in international motorsports in the 1960s with the participation of renowned automobile manufacturers with their sports prototypes such as the Ford GT 40 or Ferrari 512 M. In 1992, the Tour de France was revived as a racing event for historic racing cars and has since been held annually as Tour Auto (since 2009 “Tour Auto Optic 2000”).

S.I.H.A. presents some of the most legendary heroes of the road race, partly fought out on closed off racetracks, around the “Palais de l’Automobile” in the centre of the fairground in the new Hall 5. These include, for example, a Ferrari 250 Tour de France, a Porsche 356 A 1500 GS Carrera, a Deutsch-Bonnet HBR 5, a Jaguar Mk II in racing version or a Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta (SWB) – classic automobiles that are traded in collectors’ circles today, in some cases for sums in the tens of millions of euros.

Another impressive example illustrates how Techno-Classica Essen’s organisers are bringing something new without sacrificing the old: In addition to the traditional auction of the renowned English auction house Coys in Essen, the world’s leading classic auction house RM Sotheby’s is holding a spectacular classic auction in Germany for the first time. The auctioneer, based in Blenheim, Ontario/Canada, has chosen Techno-Classica Essen as the appropriate venue for the auction premiere. In addition to a selection of attractive classic automobiles, a collection of 80 exceptionally well-preserved young classic cars from premium brands such as BMW, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan or Rolls-Royce with the simple slogan “The Youngtimer Collection” is falling under the hammer. A total of around 150 objects of desire will be lined up by RM Sotheby’s.

The traditional highlights of the world show include the appearances of top restorers, suppliers, car literature vendors, spare parts dealers, accessory sellers, watch and technology dealers, artists and gallery owners, publishers and, last but not least, car model suppliers. They present unmatched offers in quality and quantity. Because Techno-Classica Essen is the trade show with immense potential for success. The result: the specialist dealers – as well as the visitors – come not only from all over Europe, but also from overseas. Exhibitors from North and South America as well as increasingly from Asia and the Far East will also be presenting their products.

Past and future: At the five-day trade show everything, but really everything, is on offer on the subject of vintage and young classic automobiles – from 10 to 14 April 2019 a lot of celebrities from film and television will meet there, Stars from the past and present of motorsports and also the most important decision-makers from the classic scene. The attractive and fascinating range of exhibits makes Techno-Classica Essen a first-rate automotive infotainment event for the whole family, the World Motor Show. Exhibitors and visitors have one thing in common: a passion for automotive classics – this passion is also the fuel for the organiser S.I.H.A. to reinvent the Techno-Classica Essen every year and at the same time preserve the 30-year tradition.
