| PRISMA news. Turin, April 23, 2025 – Capitalism is failing the majority. We all know this. But it persists because its only real rival, socialism, seems unachievable and undesirable, discredited by the failures of Soviet communism. Economist David Kotz call on us to think again, arguing that we must—and that we can—build a new socialism for the unique challenges of the twenty-first century.
This does not mean turning back to the socialist experiments of the twentieth century. We can learn from past successes and failures to build a more democratic and participatory economic and political system. The result would be a sustainable future of economic justice, equality, material comfort, and meaningful freedom. The journey may be difficult. But Kotz combines a clear account of how socialism can work with a realistic strategy to get there. This is the book we need to help us escape the cruelties of our capitalist present.
"You don't have to have a degree in economics or political science to read David Kotz's accessible and comprehensive book. You do have to care deeply about the unconscionable inequality of capitalism and be open to the liberatory potential of democratic socialism. There is much to argue for and with packed into this slim volume." Maxine Phillips, former editor, Democratic Left
